tips for work at home momsAs child care costs and unemployment continue to rise, it makes sense for Moms to work at home. However, it’s not easy and organizing your work and chores while taking care of the kids is a delicate balance, especially when caring for very young children. For the home schooling Mom just dealing with the whereabouts of one’s children and whether they are doing what they should be doing can be a chore by itself. It takes some serious negotiations and planning to be able to find quality work time in the midst of chaos. Here are some tips for work at home Moms.

1) The Quiet Time

Quiet time applies to Mom and the children and requires no shouting and no arguments. Also it requires they do not barge in on their Mom without a very good reason. It is a good idea to set up some kind of reward system to encourage their cooperation. An agreement may be arrived at with younger children. It is important that they know when their Mom is working. Whilst they might think twice about bothering her if she was at a regular job they often see no problem when Mom is in the next room or just down the passage.

For home customer service and other telephone or chat workers this quiet time is essential. A lot of companies that hire home workers are strict about there being no significant background noise.

2) The Home Office

Let your children know that the work computer, the desk, the work area, and any and all office supplies are off-limits to them. A supply of paper needs to be available, batteries need to be preserved and pens are for specific purposes. It may even be a good idea for the work at home Mom to lock her office door while not working. This helps in an immediate sense while also reinforcing the concept that Mom’s work area is not for children.

3) Who is the person in charge?

By putting the oldest child in charge of younger ones they often take to the responsibility with conscientious enthusiasm.

4) Work time and school time

When children are busy with homework or home schooled kids are studying, creating a work time environment for everyone is a good idea.  Some Moms install a video camera or audio monitoring system to keep an eye on the children.

5) Office hours and break time

In order to get a routine going it is important that time to work and time to play are scheduled for the same time every day. By scheduling a lunch break and other times during the day to share with the children can be a very beneficial way of safeguarding the rest of one’s time.

Children need to understand that rules are there to protect everyone’s boundaries. That way everyone gets their work done and rules are the main way that Moms successfully work at home. These tips for work at Moms can help them cope with all they have to do each day.
